Caves Caravan Park’s damper recipe

Caves Caravan Park’s very own easy and delicious campfire damper recipe the whole family can follow!

We regularly hold damper cook-up evenings around the campfire at our camp kitchen so we thought we’d share our favourite easy recipe that is child friendly and easy to follow. The hard part is choosing what secret ingredient you will add.

Damper is typically cooked as one big loaf in a camp oven buried in coals but we found the small rolls of damper wrapped in alfoil worked well because of the large crowds. It allowed each child to have fun making their own creation and add special ingredients like nutella or rosemary! And with a shorter cooking time people were able to enjoy the warm tasty bread sooner.

Damper Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup water (or enough to make a dough)
  • Secret ingredient: olives, rosemary, Nutella, marshmallows! The choice is yours.
  • Alfoil (to wrap your damper creation)

How to Prepare:

  1. Measure out your flour into a bowl
  2. Add salt
  3. Gradually add water and mix well till it makes a firm dough
  4. Put on a floured table and knead the dough for a few minutes
  5. Shape the dough into small buns (the smaller the bun, the quicker it cooks)

How to Cook:

  1. Stoke your campfire and get some nice hot coals happening
  2. Wrap your small damper bun in alfoil. Make sure you mark your name on it to remember which one is yours
  3. Place in the coals. Turn every 5 minutes
  4. Cook for approximately 10-15 minutes or until it sounds hollow when tapped
  5. Serve hot with butter or Nutella!!

Enjoy 😊
